The Academy Awards

You all deserve something much more meaningful than a gold statue of an expressionless man named "Oscar." You can walk the halls of Westminster with your heads held high, knowing you gave your best and it showed. Down deep, you know your performances exceeded expectations, and indeed, brought the Greek myths to life. Your audience was momentarily transported back to ancient Greece, and you immersed them in the culture and traditions of the day. To do that in theatre is no easy task; but you not only achieved it, you excelled. You did it with comedy, tragedy, clever writing, staging, lights and costumes. You did it with appropriate vocabulary, clear diction, impeccable timing, and just plain ol' good storytelling. Best of all, you did it as a team. There might have been a few bumps along the way, but you worked well together...another life lesson you can't learn from a book. I am so proud of each one of you.

Oh, and thank you for the "whiteboard of appreciation" in the classroom after the skits. After you left for 7th period, I carefully read each and every "note." Very sweet. I was touched.

As we wrap up our time together, we will define and discuss the epic and brainstorm the epic stories you already know. We will also start The Children's Homer and do some reading aloud in class, so make sure and bring your book to class every day. I will give you a more concrete schedule in class.

Hold your heads high,
Mrs. Dixon

You guys ROCK!

Great rehearsal on Sunday. I am so proud of all of you! It appeared that everyone worked together well and got a lot accomplished. I am quite impressed with everyone's spirit of cooperation for the most part.

Here's the schedule for the next few days:
Monday: We can't practice in the Fireside Room (bummer!), so we'll run lines in class. The skits need a bit more flow, so we'll work on that.

Tuesday: Dress rehearsals in the FS room. NO STOPPING! We go straight through and whatever happens, we muddle through and ad lib as needed. Good practice for life, believe me.

Wednesday: Performance time! I don't know if we're going to perform during activity period AND 6th period or not. I will talk with Mr. Black and find out how he wants to do it. I will let you know as soon as I know.

Thursday: We actually start class again. Remember "class?" Remember literature? Remember those days when we actually opened a book and weren't cavorting about on a stage in costumes? Remember the vocabulary word "cavort?" (Please tell me you do: the first 5 people who walk up to me and give the correct definition of "cavort" get a goodie).

On Thursday we will discuss Paris and the Golden Apple (your last reading assignment in D'Aulaires).

Friday: Start The Children's Homer.
